September 26, 2013, 10:08wow.glad to see the bbb came down on this company for screwing it's users.' From bbb:bbb accreditationon 6/30/2011 the business's accreditation from bbb was revoked.the revocation was due to violation of bbb accreditation standards:this business is not bbb accredited.to be accredited by bbb, a business must apply for accreditation and bbb must determine that the business meets bbb accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. Bbb accredited businesses must pay a fee for accreditation review/monitoring and for support of bbb services to the public.' March 22, 2013, 00:56i had no indication that this product stopped viruses from downloading onto my computer. The web site does not explicitly say that this product prevents known malware from downloading. Emisoft admits, uncharacterstically accurately, that once malware is on your machine more often than not it can't be removed.avast on the other hand blocks known malware from downloading. It's stopped alot of malware from downloading onto my machine and missed one that nothing could identify.the emisoft web site, which is filled with hype, never actually explicitly lists specifically what this product does and does not do.i caught the program using a full 500,000 m of ram.

That is way too much, and would hang any computer more than a couple of years old.the company uses scare tactics. For instance, a prominently displayed article on the web site claims that ransomware will infect even your backup drives, and there won't be anything you can do.

Other it experts are saying that while ransomware exists adn can do that it is rare and not much of a threat. It's also unclear how emisoft would prevent ransomware since it doesn't stop malware from downloading. The theme of emisoft's current newsletter is their claim that nbc's web sites are infected with malware. Emisoft antimalware costs twice as much as most other antivirus software, and you have to buy a second product for sandboxing, which avast's standard price product includes. I have an Averatec 6100 laptop - my original CD drive broke completely and I took it to a shop to have them put in a new one.I guess it's the first time I've tried a DVD in the drive, but PowerDVD doesn't recognize the DVD as being a valid format, sometimes it says there is no disk in Drive D:This one is the model I listed in the subject: QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-241The software I am using is: PowerDVD - it came with my laptop when I got it a couple years ago.The things I've tried so far:1. Upgraded firmware using an HP patch (so it's running V07 instead of V04 now, still does not work) QSI only offers DOS support for their drive.2. Patched PowerDVD v5.0 with the patches they make available on their website.3.

CD cleaner (not DVD cleaner, but how different could they be?)When you google the drive and add 'can't read DVD's', you get quite a few matches, seems like a lot of people have had the problem but have fixed it with cleaners or by upgrading the firmware.no such luck here, I need some help.edit: I forgot to mention that PowerDVD's Eject button works on the drive, just more info. Thanks in advance, Brad. Yes, I have a game installation CD here and I can explore the contents and the autoplay comes up.The DVD looks perfect to me.A new development, On about the 15th try, it popped up the Autoplay window 'how would you like to open the contents of this DVD' - I chose PowerDVD and then it asked if I wanted to play it from the beginning or resume playback. I chose play it from the beginning. Shortly after, the program went to 'Not responding' and nothing ever showed up on the screen.I've tried 5 more times and I can't get it to do that again.

What do you mean, 'all CD's don't work'? I thought you mentioned earlier you can read CD's and install from them?Sometimes powerDVD comes with the DVD drives. Those versions of PowerDVD are usually OEM and will only work with that particular drive it originally came with.

So you should try other DVD players like mentioned earlier. Also check the DivX website. To verify if this is a hardware or software problem, first try booting the PC from the cd drive using a bootable CD, like an XP CD or the UBCD.Since CD's and DVD's are read using different physical lasers, it can often happen that one of those laser is broken. If that is the case your drive would only be able to read from either CD's or DVD's, so you'd also need a bootable DVD to test the hardware. You can download and burn a copy of knoppix (dvd version) and boot that:If you can boot from CD and DVD, it is a software problem, try running the following fix, which does a harmles change to the registry. Yes, that was a mistype, sorry about that. All CD's DO work, all DVD's don't work.I have DivXAbout booting a Windows CD to test: Again, I confused by mistyping that CD's don't work. CD's do work.I don't really know how I am going to burn a DVD, but if I find that one of my friends has a DVD burner, I'll give it a try.so back at it, sigh why can't stuff work like it's supposed to?To any moderators:I would like this thread left open for a while longer, it seemed like the feedback was dead before I was ready but there are a couple of ideas to try out again.
